The fuse cut out provide reliable protection from low level overload currents that just melt the fuselink, through intermediate and very high faults current up to max interrupt capacity for the AC line system and various apparatus on the line such as transformers and disconnectors.  There are various accessories e.g. steel bracket and arc protection as available option.
